Exodus 3:11-15
1. Moses hid behind incorrect theology – We are often burdened by what God asks us to do because we think He wants us to be the deliverer. In response to Moses’ first excuse, God essentially said: “Moses, I do not what to help you do this through Me; I want to do it through you!
2. Moses hid behind insufficient knowledge, God countered Moses’ second excuse with this truth: it is not what you know that counts, it is who you know
3. Moses hid behind an inferior self-concept. But the Lord confirmed: it is not who you are that matters: It is who I am.
4. Moses hid behind inadequate ability (speech). When God calls us to a task, He will enable us to do that which he commands. The Lord’s response to this excuse? It’s not your ability that counts, but Mine.
5. Moses hid behind incomplete trust (send someone else). God always has a man or a woman ready when He needs one.
We should not be too hard on Moses, for we have been in that same position
· We say, “I can’t do this for You” And God says, “then let Me do it through you.”
· We say, “I don’t know enough” God says “You know Me. That’s enough.”
· We say, “No one will respect me,” God says “That’s not important. What is important is that they respect Me.”
· We say, “I don’t have the ability.” God says, “My grace is sufficient; it’s My ability that counts.”
· We say, “God, send someone else.” And God says, “This is not a request”
When we feel inadequate to do the things God desires, we can be encouraged by the ways God met Moses’ needs, questions, and fears. We never know what God might do through us.
WISDOM CHARACTERISTICS
James’s list of wisdom characteristics
First – Godly wisdom is pure, meaning holy before God (cf. Ps. 24:4) and morally good before people (cf. 1 Peter 3:2) By purity, James meant separation from cultural values that do not align with God’s way, such as valuing the wealthy more highly than the poor (cf. Jas. 2:1-7). NO stain of the world’s ways should remain on a disciple walking in step with the Messiah.
Second - godly wisdom is peaceable. This shows how important community was to James. He emphasized caring for others and being part of a group of believers to live out godly wisdom
Third – godly wisdom is gentle. Those who act kindly treating others with compassion and sensitivity, generate peace in their relationships.
Fourth – godly wisdom is “easy to be intreated” and willing to listen.
Fifth – godly wisdom is full of mercy
Sixth – godly wisdom is full of good fruit, a metaphor indicating maturity and abundance. Wise people have reached the maturity needed to produce fruit, and when they do so, they help their communities thrive.
Finally, James summed up his wisdom ethics with an overarching quality: peacemaking (vs. 18). As Jesus taught that peacemakers would be called children of God (Matt. 5:9), so James wrote that peacemakers would produce justice or righteousness in all parts of their lives.
