Teen Bible Study: “The Power to Resist”
Opening Icebreaker:
What’s the hardest temptation you’ve ever faced? Share (if comfortable) something you wanted but knew wasn’t right or good for you.
Scripture Breakdown: Matthew 4:1-11
- Verses 1-2: Why the Wilderness?
- The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, showing us that even hard seasons have a purpose.
- Jesus fasted for 40 days—a time of preparation before His ministry began.
- Verses 3-4: The First Temptation—Turning Stones to Bread
- Satan tempted Jesus to use His power for selfish needs.
- Jesus responded with Deuteronomy 8:3, saying, "Man shall not live by bread alone..."
- Teen Lesson: We’re tempted to take shortcuts—cheating, lying, or avoiding hard work. But Jesus teaches us that God’s Word is more important than instant satisfaction.
- Verses 5-7: The Second Temptation—Testing God’s Protection
- Satan quoted Psalm 91:11-12 but twisted it, challenging Jesus to force God’s hand.
- Jesus responded with Deuteronomy 6:16, rejecting the idea of testing God.
- Teen Lesson: We might demand signs from God—“If You’re real, prove it!” But faith means trusting even when we don’t see proof right away.
- Verses 8-10: The Third Temptation—The Shortcut to Power
- Satan offered Jesus power if He worshiped him.
- Jesus refused, quoting Deuteronomy 6:13, declaring that only God is worthy of worship.
- Teen Lesson: We might be tempted to gain status, popularity, or success the wrong way. But real victory comes from following God’s path.
Life Application for 2025
- Temptation today is everywhere—social media, peer pressure, instant gratification.
- Lent is a time to say NO to distractions and YES to God.
- Challenge: This week, choose one way to resist temptation (fasting from social media, gossip, or selfishness).
