“The fear of the Lord” speaks of true, saying faith. This is a slogan of biblical wisdom. Job concludes that wisdom is to fear, or reverence, God. This is not a paralyzing fear but an energizing one, spurred on by a person’s love for Him and desire to honor Him. This fear appropriately drives a person to righteousness and causes him or her to shun evil. Fearing God also means to have a properly respectful attitude toward Him and seek Him in humility. The Bible tells us, “Be not wise in your own eyes” (Prov. 3:7) for good reason; because those who are wise in their own eyes will not seek the wisdom of God; instead, they think they have it already.
